Remember Those Who Labor This Holiday Weekend
Labor Day weekend marks the symbolic end of summer, with trips to the shore, cookouts with family and time spent on the water boating or fishing. I encourage you to take a few moments from enjoying Labor Day festivities to recall the significance of the holiday.

Labor Day is a time we set aside to thank and honor all workers for their contributions to society. From factory workers to first responders, teachers to medical professionals, and municipal and county workers to small business owners – everyone plays an important role in helping our community grow and prosper.

Many people will have the ability to rest from their labor, but others serve in positions that will require them to work through the holiday. When you encounter such individuals this weekend, offer them a kind and encouraging word
to thank them for all they do. I likewise thank all of you who are or have been employed for the services you have provided. This is your holiday. Enjoy it to the fullest, and please stay safe. Happy Labor Day!

If you’re traveling, log onto www.511PA.com to check current traffic impacts from construction, traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 770 traffic cameras. The service is free and available 24 hours a day.
Appropriate Disposal of American Flags
The American Legion Post 210 in Doylestown collects old worn and torn flags throughout the year and hosts a flag retirement ceremony to properly dispose of the flags during the summer months. A box has been placed outside the building, located at 315 North St., in which to drop off flags. For more information on how to display the flag, its history and more, click here.
Save the Date: Senior Expo is Sept. 28
I will host my 12th annual Senior Expo on Friday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Central Bucks Senior Center, located at 700 Shady Retreat Road in Doylestown.

Many seniors are unaware of the many services and programs available to them through the state and federal governments, as well as local nonprofit and community groups. This expo offers an excellent opportunity for seniors to gain access to these resources, as well as to offer their insights and perspectives about state-related issues. The expo will also include exhibitors, lunch and musical entertainment. There is no cost to attend.

Attendees are encouraged to bring old, unused or expired medications for proper disposal by The Council of Southeast Pennsylvania Inc. and Doylestown Township Police.

If you already know you’ll be coming, please RSVP to my district office in Doylestown by calling (215) 489-2126. If not, please save the date and we hope you can join us!

Fireworks Law Needs Changes

Within the past year, a new law took effect that modernized and expanded the sale of fireworks in Pennsylvania. That led to an explosion – pun intended – of fireworks sales that has resulted in many complaints from residents, PTSD victims and animal owners about the frequency, noise and hours of the fireworks being set off in residential areas.

As a result, I have co-sponsored new legislation that would repeal the most recent changes made to the fireworks law and reinstate the provisions as they existed prior the updated law. This would remove the most onerous provisions of the new fireworks law, particularly the legalization and taxation of “Class C” or “consumer-grade” fireworks, which contain up to 50 milligrams of explosive material which have been cited as causing the most disruption to the lives of our veterans, seniors and pets.

I am hopeful this legislation will be fast-tracked during the fall session.

State Unemployment Rate Down to 4.2 Percent in July

Earlier this month, we learned that Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate declined one-tenth of a percentage point from June to 4.2 percent, the lowest rate since it was matched in May 2007. Over the year, the Pennsylvania unemployment rate declined by six-tenths of a percentage point, according to the state’s Department of Labor and Industry.

The estimated number of Pennsylvania residents working or looking for work, known as the civilian labor force, was up 7,000 in July as a 15,000 gain in employment outweighed a decline of 8,000 from the ranks of the unemployed. This was the second consecutive month in which employment rose while unemployment fell. Over the year, the civilian labor force was down by 50,000 with the majority of the movement due to a decrease in unemployment.

The estimated number of jobs in Pennsylvania, referred to as total nonfarm jobs, was up 2,100 from June to a record high of 6,020,500.
