Plumstead Township to Receive State Grants

Thanks to funding from the Commonwealth Financing Authority, two projects within the 143rd District will receive state grants which were announced this week in Harrisburg. Those projects within our district include $76,500 for stream bank stabilization along a tributary of Pine Run in Plumstead Township, and $339,746 to design and install a new filtration system for Summer Hill Well No. 5, also in Plumstead Township.

These grants are designed to help improve the quality of life in local communities, including clean water and other environmental initiatives. Our local governments need tools, such as this funding program, in order to make our communities safe and great places to live.

Doylestown Health - Beaming with Pride!
It was exciting to be part of the ceremony setting the final steel beam for the new Center for Heart and Vascular Care. I was in grade school as I watched this hospital being built at its present site. Over the years it has responded to the growth in our community, and its health care demands with compassion and high-quality care. The community’s investment in Doylestown Health is reflective of how much this health care system means to all of us who live here.

Seniors Invited to Sept. 28 Senior Expo

Senior citizens living within the 143rd Legislative District in Bucks County are invited to my 12th annual Senior Expo, set for Friday, Sept. 28, at the Central Bucks Senior Center.

I encourage all seniors, caregivers and family members to stop by and find out about the numerous programs available right here in Bucks County and throughout southeastern Pennsylvania to help our senior population and their caregivers. The senior center is located at 700 Shady Retreat Road in Doylestown. The expo will begin at 10 a.m. and last through 1:30 p.m. There is no cost to attend.

The Senior Expo will include exhibitors, lunch and musical entertainment by the Leisure Time Four, a barbershop quartet from the award-winning Bucks County Country Gentlemen Barbershop Chorus. Also at the expo, members of the American Legion Post 210 of Doylestown will collect old, worn and torn American flags for proper disposal. The American Legion collects old worn and/or torn flags throughout the year and then hosts a flag retirement ceremony to properly dispose of the flags during the month of October.

Attendees are encouraged to bring old, unused or expired medications for proper disposal by The Council of Southeast Pennsylvania Inc. and Doylestown Township Police.

Please RSVP to my district office in Doylestown by calling (215) 489-2126. Information about the expo can also be found at www.RepQuinn.net.

Are You Prepared?

With remnants of Tropical Depression Florence hitting much of Pennsylvania this week, state and national officials remind residents that September is National Preparedness month, an opportunity to prepare ourselves and our families now and throughout the year.

As part of the awareness month, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is urging residents to make and practice a preparedness plan, learn life-saving skills, check your insurance coverage and save for an emergency.

Residents should adapt their plans for all types of emergencies and disasters – residential fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, snowstorms, earthquakes, natural gas leaks and other events involving evacuations.

If you have special needs, use oxygen or electrical powered equipment, tt is important to know who in your community will be able to help you during a disaster. Your municipality or county emergency management agency can help you get ready for emergencies before they happen. I’ve provided the list of contact information here

PA Treasury Holding Military Decorations

The Pennsylvania Treasury announced the launch of a new state website dedicated to reuniting military decorations that have been reported as unclaimed property with their rightful owners.

The new search function allows users to search their names, or the name of a loved one, to see if Treasury is holding a military decoration as unclaimed property. In addition, users can look through a photo gallery featuring some of the decorations that are in the unclaimed property vault, as well as medals that have been returned to their rightful owners. Military decorations are often reported to Treasury as contents held in a safe deposit box that has gone unclaimed or abandoned.

Since 2017, Treasury has returned 58 service decorations, some of which have been in Treasury’s custody for decades, including Purple Hearts, to their rightful owners. Treasury continues to search for the owners of over 500 unclaimed military awards.

New Website Offers Latest on Spotted Lanternfly

The spotted lanternfly (SLF), a pest native to China and Vietnam, was first discovered in Berks County in 2014 and presents a significant threat to Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry. Products specifically at risk include grapes, tree-fruit, hardwoods and nursery items.

The pest has since spread to 13 counties – Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia and Schuylkill – which are now considered to be part of a quarantine area.

While little is known about the insect’s behavior and biology, researchers at the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) are working to gather scientific data on how to contain and manage this pest. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) and USDA are working to implement containment and control efforts.

Penn State Extension has compiled a comprehensive website with a lot of resources, including a checklist for homeowners in the quarantine area, tips for handling yard waste, ways to report and dispose of the insect, notices of public meetings, along with signs and symptoms, what’s at risk, where it’s found, and how the state is managing response to the insect.
